However, Bruce’s side were last in the relegation zone back in October and were eight points clear of the drop when the season was suspended due to the coronaviru­s pandemic.

Speaking to Talksport, Shelvey was asked about the job done by Bruce, and the midfielder said: favour of returning.

“I just want there to be a decision now. Either play or cancel the season. It’s got to the point where you’re training, trying to motivate yourself. I’ve got no problem going back and playing behind closed doors.

“I know there’s so much risk but if everything’s done right I don’t have a problem with it.”

“It’s been great to be fair.

“Every time you get a new manager you feel refreshed and recharged and ready to go again.

“When you get a new manager it’s like the first day back at school. Everybody is trying to run around and look busy. You want his attention and to try to make an impression.” Shelvey also reflected on daily life under Bruce and said: “The training and standard has gone up. “He’s brought an enjoyment into the training but he’s been great for me. He put his arm around me and made me work harder.”
