Five more virus deaths across the North East

-

FIVE more people have died in North East hospitals after contracting coronavirus as the UK’s death toll rose by 93.

The number is the lowest increase on a Tuesday since the lockdown began, and brings the overall number of hospital deaths across the UK to 32,512.

A total of 79 new deaths were reported in England, Wales had eight, Scotland recorded five, and Northern Ireland had one amid fears the UK could see a second wave of Covid-19.

In the North East, there were four trusts which reported Covid-19 related deaths on Monday, including the Newcastle Hospitals NHS trust and the Northumbria Healthcare NHS trust, which runs health services and Northumberland and North Tyneside.

The two trusts reported one death each.

The North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust also reported one death. The South Tees Hospitals trust reported two.

The coronavirus reproduction rate, or R rate, may have risen above one in parts of England, government scientists have said.

Tuesday’s figures often spike due to a lag in reporting fatalities from weekends - 32 deaths were announced on Monday and 31 on Sunday. The latest daily increase of 93 hospital deaths is almost half of the total announced two weeks ago.

On recent Tuesdays, 145 deaths were announced on June 9; 164 on June 2; 142 on May 26; 227 on May 19 and 425 on May 12. The highest rise on a Tuesday was 873 deaths on April 21.

The UK’s true coronavirus death toll in all settings, including care homes, and where Covid-19 is mentioned on the death certificate has passed 53,000 – more than 11,000 higher than the Government’s official toll of 41,736.

New ONS figures show that 47,820 deaths involving Covid-19 had occurred in England and Wales up to June 5 and had been registered by June 13.

It means 53,077 deaths have been registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate, including suspected cases, according to the latest available data.

According to the latest weekly breakdown from the ONS, coronavirus-related deaths in England and Wales have fallen to their lowest number since lockdown was first implemented.
