Dickson to go into bat for Durham

DURHAM have signed Kent opening batsman Sean Dickson on a two-year deal.

Dickson will join the club on loan for the remainder of Durham’s 2020 season and will be eligible to play in both red and white-ball formats.

He heads north having made 120 appearance­s for Kent since joining the club in 2015, scoring 10 first-class centuries throughout his career.

The right-handed batsman recorded Kent’s highest post-war first-class total in 2017, amassing an impressive 318 runs against Northampto­nshire in the County Championsh­ip at Beckenham.

He was also part of the side which reached the 2018 Royal London One-Day Cup fnal at Lord’s and of Kent’s promotion-winning team to Division One of the Championsh­ip that same year.

The 28-year-old is seen as one of the best fielders on the county circuit and took 39 catches for Kent in the 2018 season, being named the club’s fielder of the year the previous summer.

Director of Cricket Marcus North said: “We are delighted Sean has signed for Durham and we have been able to secure the signature of a proven performer in English cricket.

“Sean’s record in first-class cricket is exceptiona­l, with a track record of scoring big hundreds and a reputation as one of the best fielders in the country.

“He will bring additional experience and quality to the Durham squad.”

Meanwhile, paceman James Weighell and leg spinner Ben Whitehead will leave the club when their contracts expire.

Weighell made his debut in 2015 against Middlesex and went on to make 15 first-class appearance­s, claiming 52 wickets and scoring 502 runs.

Whitehead, 23, made six appearance­s for Durham - all in the Vitality T20 Blast - picking up five wickets with a best of 2-23 against Lancashire.
