New recruits mean no danger of the drop, declares Waddle

-

CHRIS Waddle believes Newcastle have had a good transfer window and is confident they won’t be involved in the Premier League relegation discussion this season.

The Magpies have had a brilliant week in the transfer market after sealing the signings of England international forward Callum Wilson, Scotland international winger Ryan Fraser and Northern Ireland international left-back Jamal Lewis.

It followed the arrivals of Republic of Ireland international midfielder Jeff Hendrick and third-choice goalkeeper Mark Gillespie on free transfers with Newcastle strengthening in areas that were needed ahead of Saturday’s Premier League opener against West Ham.

And although ex-Magpie Waddle doesn’t believe Newcastle will be transformed into European contenders following their summer business, he is confident they can now establish themselves as a comfortable mid-table side.

“Yeah,” Waddle replied when asked if Newcastle have had a good transfer window on BBC Radio 5Live’s Football Daily.

“I think Callum Wilson will suit the way they play with counter-attacking football. He has terrific pace.

“Ryan Fraser carries the ball very well and Lewis is an international footballer so you have got to say they have made three good signings.

“Listen, they are not going to qualify for Europe with those three signings, let’s be honest, but it is going to make sure they are going to be a Premier League club next season.”
