Students’ success is just grade for Beach

-

NINE students from Blyth South Beach Karate Club have graded to their next belt despite the obstacles they faced due to the coronavirus lockdown.

The closure of the club in March did not stop the students from training.

All classes moved online via Zoom for the initial part of the lockdown before moving outdoors when the lifting of restrictions allowed it.

When the club could finally return to action indoors in July, the students had not missed out on their training and were ready to sit their gradings.

Karate Union of Great Britain grading examiner Sensei John Holdsworth visited the club to grade the students, who had to adapt to doing their training from a two-metre distance at all times.

Hannah Bowart, Alex Lazenby, Mason Spence and Will Trainer all sat their first grading and successfully passed their orange belt.

Taylor McAlpine passed her yellow belt grading and Kanushanth Balachandran, Denujaa Balachandran and James Bowart passed their brown belt grading.

The latter two received a pass and a half, which is a rare result, while Liam Stead gained his brown and white belt.

Sensei Dylan Gibson, a third dan and a club instructor alongside his sister Gemma, said: “Everyone performed very well, especially under the circumstances of having to adapt their training to social distancing.

“We are very proud of everyone for sticking to their training and supporting the club throughout the lockdown.”

The club trains at the Blyth Isabella Centre on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings.

All classes must be booked in advance due to social distancing.
