THINGS MUST CHANGE TO GIVE MAGPIES A FIGHTING CHANCE OF SUCCESS

signing who had enjoyed a magnificent week with Scotland, and Almiron who if he does nothing else works his socks off.

And don’t tell me they were tired after being on international duty. So had Jeff Hendrick yet he started. No, if Newcastle go to Wolves with the same set-up and attitude they will be slaughtered again. Wolves are one of the best attacking sides I’ve seen in a long while. They play great stuff. Things simply have to change from United’s perspective. The onus is on Bruce and then on the players he picks. He tells us this team is ‘a work in progress’ but I don’t see any progress.

We don’t want or expect United to go gung-ho. They aren’t good enough for that. They aren’t the Entertainers.

But they ought to get forward more and occasionally have a shot on goal for goodness’ sake!

The club spent more than £100m on forward talent like Callum Wilson, Allan Saint-Maximin, Miggy Almiron and Joelinton yet never give them their heads (I’m talking about the first three not Big Joe).

If Wilson is not given support pretty quickly his head will drop and he will be wondering why he was seduced by the huge crowds to come to Tyneside.

I fear for Newcastle unless they adopt a very different attitude from top to bottom.

If you look at the current league table the team two places below them is Manchester United, who have beaten them 4-1, and a place further down is Brighton, who won 3-0 up here. Will they remain below Newcastle?

Jamaal Lascelles, the captain and therefore Bruce’s right-hand man on the pitch, talked after the Man U game of the Mags “pushing on too much” when they should have sat back and settled for a point.

That statement frightens me to death. Man U set a PL record for the season with 28 shots on Newcastle’s goal and all of those didn’t come in the last 10 minutes.

If Lascelles thinks his side were too adventurous last time out what on earth can we expect at Wolves?

The thinking of Bruce and his captain must change to give Newcastle a chance.
