Harsh words in heated United dressing-room

STEVE Bruce admits that harsh words were exchanged in the immediate aftermath of Newcastle United’s 4-1 hammering at home to Manchester United.

In a week of home truths, players have held open and honest conversations between themselves, and skipper Jamaal Lascelles stated that scenes of “anger” had unfolded behind the scenes last Saturday night. Ahead of the trip to Wolves tomorrow, Bruce hopes that the lack of a crowd at Molineux can now play into his side’s favour at what is usually one of the most daunting atmospheres in the top flight.

When asked what had been said after the painful defeat last weekend, Bruce told The Chronicle: “I think you know that what’s said in the dressing room will remain in the dressing room.

“But they are right, there were some harsh words, and so there should be.

“To be 1-0 up, and then to be 1-1 with four minutes left and to lose 4-1 is not right.”

But Bruce knows that this is the season of freak results, which are largely due to the strange atmospheres at stadia caused by the lack of supporters. He added: “We are seeing results that are very much off the chart at the minute.

“Whether it’s because we haven’t had a pre-season or whether it’s crowds not being present meaning shackles have been taken off or defenders forgetting how to defend!

“I don’t know, but I have never seen this in 20 odd years in the Premier League that every game teams are hitting two, three, four, five or six or seven in some cases.”
