How to stay in the UK if you’re

EU CITIZENS AND THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS MUST APPLY TO THE EU SETTLEMENT SCHEME TO CARRY ON LIVING AND WORKING IN THE UK AFTER JUNE 30, 2021

-

UK is no longer part of the European Union. EU citizens and their family members must apply to the EU Settlement Scheme so that they can continue to live and work in the UK after June 30, 2021.

If you’re an EU citizen who is resident in the UK before the end of the UK Transition period on December 31, you are eligible to apply and have until June 30, 2021 to do so. There have already been more than 4.2 million applications to the scheme.

It’s free and easy to apply – most people can apply online from their own home in just 15 minutes.

There are three steps to the application process. First, you need to prove your identity, then show that you live in the UK, and lastly declare any criminal convictions.

Remember if you have children, you may need to apply for them as well. Each child needs their own application. You can apply for your child or they can apply for themselves.

If your child was born in the UK but is not a British citizen, they will still need to apply. If you’re not sure, you can check whether they have British citizen status: find out more at gov.uk/eusettlementscheme.

SUPPORT WITH YOUR APPLICATION

There’s plenty of support available online, over the phone and in person to help people apply to the EU Settlement Scheme. The Home Office has more than 1,500 staff working on the scheme, with 250 staff in place to answer questions and help people apply. Call 0300 123 7379 from 8am-8pm, Monday to Friday, or 9.30am4.30pm, Saturday and Sunday.

The Home Office has also made up to £17million available to organisations across the UK to support vulnerable people in applying, including the homeless, elderly and victims of domestic abuse or modern slavery.

Additional support is available for those who can’t apply digitally, with assistance over the phone.

You can use the EU Exit ID Document Check app, or post your identity evidence to complete the identity stage of your application.

WHAT WILL YOU GET?

If your application to the EU Settlement Scheme is successful, you’ll be able to continue living and working in the UK after June 30, 2021.

If you’re accepted, you’ll be given either settled status or pre-settled status, and will have secured rights in UK law.

Which status you get depends on how long you’ve been living in the UK when you apply, and your rights will be different according to your status.

Both types of status give you the right to:
