Robins not so chirpy after losing to Town

- By MARK CARRUTHERS

NORTH Shields manager Marc Nash was left “hugely disappointed” by his side’s FA Vase exit at the hands of Northern League title rivals Hebburn Town.

The Robins went into the second-round tie as the only club to have taken league points from Kevin Bolam’s side – but came out on the wrong end of an actionpacked contest at the Green Energy Sports Ground.

The two teams could not be separated at half-time as a stunning effort from Robins’ midfielder Ryan Carr cancelled out an opener from Hebburn captain Louis Storey.

The hosts took control of the tie as former South Shields duo Michael Richardson and Graeme Armstrong found the net within the opening 15 minutes of the second half.

They held on to a win to set up a third-round home tie against Vauxhall Motors next weekend - despite Callum Smith offering the Robins hope when he pulled a goal back with five minutes left.

Nash said: “I thought we were the better side in longer spells of the game – but that spell early in the second period killed us.

“It gave us too much to do and it is similar to what we did to them in the league game.

“We did not get the rub of the green and I think we would have grabbed an equaliser if the game had gone on for another five minutes.

“We have come out second best because of that naivety we showed in the second half and we are hugely disappointed to go out.”

■ NORTHERN League Division Two side Jarrow’s historic Vase run ended in cruel circumstances against Warrington Rylands.

The North West Counties League leaders were heavy favourites to see off Dave Bell and Scott Oliver’s side and they looked to have secured a narrow 1-0 victory thanks to Chris Doyle’s goal early in the second half.

However, a dramatic late equaliser from Jarrow captain Jordan Mellish set off wild celebrations from the home faithful and took the tie into a penalty shoot-out.

Jarrow edged their way past Yorkshire Amateur in a shoot-out in the last round to secure a firstever second-round appearance – but that is where their run ended after visitors Rylands held their nerve to claim a 5-4 success from the spot.
