No Kidd-ing, Heed’s boss is so frustrated
GATESHEAD player-manager Mike Williamson suffered the frustration of another late show on Saturday.
After shipping a 94th-minute equaliser at Leamington the previousweek the Heed lost to a late goal against Kidderminster.
Again it was undeserved. The Tynesiders were worthy of three points at Leamington and a share of the spoils against the Harriers.
The 1-0 defeat means six points have now been dropped due to late goals in the opening quarter of the season.
It is becoming an unwanted trait and one Williamson is determined to address.
He said: “I felt our concentration on the simple basic things went a bit.
“We need to take our chances when they come along and we had clear and obvious goalscoring opportunities.
“Ultimately, though, conceding late goals has been our achilles heel .
“We need to make sure we eradicate it if we are going to push up the league.”
In a tight top-six game between two in-form sides, it was a scruffy 83rd-minute goal which settled the issue.
Ashley Hemmings’ corner was headed home by Harriers’ captain Lewis Montrose in a packed penalty area.
The effort lacked power but Heed goalkeeper Harrison Male allowed it to slip past him and into the net.
It was enough to end Gateshead’s six-game unbeaten run.
Williamson added: “We defended very well against a good team but the manner in which we conceded was disappointing.
“There were many positives and we will eradicate the late goals, so in a game where we should win we would not lose.”
Captain Greg Olley had a great chance to give Gateshead an early lead but could not finish a one-onone.
Both sides fashioned openings in an entertaining opening half played in driving rain.
The tempo dropped in a second period when the Heed had more of the ball but could not find the net.
That proved costly as the Harriers, unbeaten away, scored the decisive goal, Danny Greenfield close to an equaliser.
Gateshead will now lick their wounds and go again at home to Farsley Celtic in the FA Trophy tomorrow night.
