BEING BRIDGET JONES
BBC2, 9pm
FROM the big pants to the endless calorie counting, Bridget Jones struck a chord with women across the nation when she arrived in our lives 25 years ago.
The icon first appeared in a newspaper column, detailing her rocky relationship with men, booze, fags and knicker elastic.
When Helen Fielding’s creation hit the silver screen in 2001, Bridget became a cultural phenomenon.
Celebrating the legacy of Bridget, this film is a funny look back at the character, but also an exploration into the changing attitudes towards women.
Hugh Grant, who plays Bridget’s love-rat fixation Daniel Cleaver, says: “He’s what my mother’s generation would have called ‘not safe in taxis’.” Helen, showing us her own 1978 uni diary, the inspiration for Bridget, recalls: “I was trying to be different, thinner, better.”
Meanwhile, Renée Zellweger discusses her favourite Bridget moments, and there’s a chat with Colin Firth, who plays Bridget’s love interest Mr Darcy.
