Burra put Bes foot forward in Cup win

JOE Besford notched a first-half brace of penalties as Burradon and New Fordley triumphed 9-0 at Percy Main Amateurs in a Team Valley Carpets Challenge Cup Group D encounter at Purvis Park.

Leading inside 30 seconds through Ian Lee, they never looked back and were four goals to the good after 20 minutes thanks to goals from Kris Sands, Liam Hudson and Richie Clarke.

Besford’s brace made it six at the interval, Scott Pocklingto­n added number seven within minutes of the restart and Ross Moore and Dan Lowther completed the scoring inside the final 20 minutes.

The Main were awarded but then missed a penalty in the dying minutes.

In the same group, AFC Killingwor­th hit five without reply at Ponteland United.

Konner Lamb registered a sevenminut­e hat-trick, Sam Walton and Connor Walker adding further efforts to complete the scoring.

Newcastle Blue Star notched their fourth straight Challenge Cup win to open up a six-point gap at the top of Group B when edging out visitors Winlaton Vulcans 2-1.

Sam Norris and Dan O’Reilly netted for the hosts, Owen Stubbs replying.

Blyth Town hold a three-point advantage in Group C as they won 2-0 at home to Seaton Delaval, leaving it late before Jack Fennell and Jak Ditchburn scored in the closing minutes.

Their cause was helped by Alnwick Town being held to a 1-1 draw at home to North Shields Athletic.

■ PRUDHOE Youth Club became the first side to qualify for the semifinals

of the Combinatio­n Cup, although they were held to a 1-1 draw with second-placed Red Row Welfare.

Lee Orr and Anthony Chapman notched trebles as Whitburn were victorious at FC United of Newcastle. Hebburn Under-23s lost 3-2 to Haltwhistl­e Jubilee in the other cup game.

Bedlington and Hexham also registered big wins in their respective groups. The former saw off Rothbury 4-1 - Connor Straughton with a double - and the latter defeated Gosforth Bohemians 3-0 with Peter McRoberts bagging a brace.

■ IN the Amateur Cup, Newcastle Independen­t put eight past Newcastle Blue Star Under-23s - Stewart Wright (3), Andy Hall (2) and Loz Wylde (2) among the scorers.

Stewart English notched three times as Gateshead Redheugh came through 4-2 at Ellington in one a handful of late kick-offs.
