Former Magpies trialist Scott signs one-year Heed deal after Cumbrians release

- By JEFF BOWRON

GATESHEAD have signed former Hebburn hot-shot Cedwyn Scott on a one-year deal following his release from Carlisle United.

The 22-year-old’s goalscoring exploits at Hebburn, where he plundered 22 goals in 17 games, saw the Hexham-born forward hit the headlines and earn a trial with Newcastle United.

The free-scoring forward spent four weeks with the Magpies, making a trio of appearances at Under-23s level but not doing enough to earn a permanent contract.

Scott was handed a short-term deal by League Two outfit Carlisle but was once again failed to break through, coming off the bench seven times.

“Every time I play I want to score a goal,” said Scott.

“Any type of goal will do. They can be scruffy ones, tap-ins, scorchers from 30 yards – I’m not bothered as long as they go in the back of the net.

“I’m a goalscorer so hopefully I’ll score a lot of goals, but you need to play regularly to score goals.

“I want to hit 15-20 goals for Gateshead next season, that would be ideal, and see how high we can finish.”

He added: “I want to be a full-time player, which I made clear when Iwas playing part-time football, and I’ve now got that chance.”

Player-manager Mike Williamson is ecstatic to have his second big signing of the summer after capturing former Magpie Adam Campbell from Darlington.

He said: “We had a look at Scott a couple of years ago but didn’t have the budget, so I’m delighted to now get him through the door.

“It didn’t work out for him at Carlisle but he’s got a proven track record as a goalscorer and knows where the net is.”

The Tynesiders, meanwhile, have agreed a deal with Huddersfield Town for the season-long loan of 20-year-old Aussie goalkeeper Jacob Marshall.
