Shearer is backed for ‘top job’

-

ALAN Shearer has been backed to take a ‘top job’ at Newcastle United to act as an ‘adviser to everybody’.

That is the view of former Magpies team-mate Rob Lee, who believes the legendary number nine would give honest opinions in the best interests of the club.

Newcastle’s search for a director of football remains ongoing, with co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi recently dismissing claims Michael Emenalo had turned an offer down.

Shearer has previously confirmed he has held conversations with co-owner Amanda Staveley during the closing stages of the protracted takeover saga.

The consortium have taken steps to repair strained relationships with club legends and cult heroes previously exiled in the Mike Ashley era.

Lee is convinced the new owners need a strong presence alongside them to help navigate their way through an ambitious rebuild.

The former midfielder believes there is no better candidate for such a role than Shearer as he would not be “influenced by anybody”.

Lee told City AM: “I would get someone who knows Newcastle and the club and sits as an adviser to everybody, to the board – even above a director of football.

“Because if we get the top job wrong, every other job is wrong. I think it’s imperative to get it right behind the scenes before we get it right on the pitch because it starts at the very top.

“I’m a great friend of Alan but he would be my choice. You know he’s not going to be influenced by anybody. He’ll make decisions because he loves Newcastle.

“He’ll give his honest opinion. He’s not scared of anyone, he won’t be bullied by agents. They can trust him to give them the right call.”
