Pervert jailed for having vile stash of child images

- By ROB KENNEDY Court reporter rob.kennedy@reachplc.com

A PERVERT who engaged in “truly shocking” conversations about raping children had downloaded hundreds of vile images of youngsters and posted one on Facebook.

Arthur Marsh boasted that he had raped a two-year-old, said children were for sex and bragged that he lived near youngsters and a park during disturbing chats with a fellow paedophile.

While there was no evidence he had physically hurt children as he claimed, police found a disgusting collection of pictures and videos of young girls on DVDs and a phone at his home. Now the 48-year-old, who has since been diagnosed with a potentially life-threatening serious medical condition, has been jailed at Newcastle Crown Court.

The offences came to light when officers went to his bedsit at Graingerville South, Newcastle, in November 2019 after he posted an indecent image on Facebook of two girls aged around five or six.

When his devices were seized, pictures and videos, some in the most serious category, were found.

The court heard examples included a girl aged between five and nine being raped.

He had made “systematic searches” for indecent images and made 11,000 searches for them.

On a chat app, he had engaged in “extremely graphic” conversations with two other users, including one using the name “younglover”.

During the chats, Marsh sent a small number of indecent images to the other two and also discussed raping young children.

Judge Penny Moreland told him: “It’s shocking to read what you thought appropriate. You discussed sexual intercourse with very young children and the violent rape of children. You boasted of raping (a twoyear-old). I’m told that’s not true and I don’t know if it is but you boasted of that to further the conversation.”

Marsh, who has 23 previous convictions from two decades ago but not for sex offences, pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images, three counts of distributing them and possessing extreme pornography featuring a horse and a woman. He was jailed for two years and eight months and must sign on the sex offenders’ register for life and will be subject to a sexual harm prevention order for five years.

Andrew Walker, defending, said he had shown remorse and added: “He has struggled with mental ill health for some time and lives a fairly isolated lifestyle. He has been told he has a serious, life-threatening illness and he is shocked by that discovery.”
