Ministers need to be taught a lesson

- PETER SAGAR

WE have seen in recent months just how wrong-minded and untrustworthy Prime Minister Johnson really can be. It is no wonder that so many polls say a majority of British people think that he should resign. Yet, every time Johnson or his cronies are asked about his position they say that it is time to move on and that Johnson is ‘delivering’ for the British people. But is that really the case?

To be fair Covid-19 would have been a challenge for any Prime Minister, however honest and capable. However, that cannot excuse Johnson’s record on the pandemic. We have had the highest death total of any European nation, whilst simultaneously presiding over the deepest economic recession. We saw billions of pounds wasted on a Testing and Tracing System, put into the hands of a friend of Johnson, Dido Harding, who had no health service experience that was an utter failure, while millions more were spent on contracts going to friends of the Tories. Then there was the care homes tragedy. What certainly cannot be excused, is the fact that Johnson missed five COBRA meetings in early 2020, as the pandemic took hold. Truly disgraceful and showing his utter lack of concern for the people of this country.

Now of course, we have the cost of living crisis. While Chancellor Sunak and his billionaire tax avoiding wife Akshata Murty, who it has been reported, may have avoided up to £20m in tax with non-dom status, have recently spent some time in one of their many homes, this time in California, millions of other British people have had to choose between eating or heating, or feeding themselves or their children. It is clear that Johnson and his government neither understand the plight of millions of Britons today, or remotely care about them.

Then there was the so-called big agenda for this government, that of ‘Levelling-Up’ to help people in places such as the Northeast. Unsurprisingly no progress on this has been made; or indeed probably ever will be. After all, the proposed high speed rail link across the North from Newcastle to Liverpool has been effectively scrapped. The whole Levelling-Up agenda is just another load of hot air from Johnson, with absolutely no substance.

On Thursday voters have the opportunity to show Johnson and the Tories what they think of his record of lying and failure. Let’s all hope, for the sake of the country, that they take it.
