Which City faces Toon, asks Clark

-

LEE CLARK believes Manchester City’s Champions League heartache against Real Madrid could work one of two ways for Newcastle United at the at the Etihad Stadium tomorrow.

Pep Guardiola’s men face the Magpies needing to erase memories of their horror night in Spain and seeking a win to stay top of the Premier league.

Clark had sympathy for the Citizens but hopes United can take advantage in the televised teatime kick-off.

The former Toon midfielder said: “Regardless of City’s Champions League exit this weekend’s clash was always going to be tough for United.

“I have no allegiance to City whatsoever but I was gutted watching their game the other night as they were so close.

“I am very much one of those people who wants to see all the British clubs be successful.

“I know City have bounced back after setbacks before but I have not seen the impact the result had on the players behind the scenes.

“Pep Guardiola said after the game things were positive still and insisted the players will be fine and go again. The proof will be in the pudding on Sunday.”

He added: “It can go two ways, City may look at it and think they have the one opportunity to win something now in the title, which Pep always says is the biggest prize as it is played over a period of time, and act like the wounded animal.

“Or will they have a bit of a hangover after an epic game and the fact it went to extra time.

“If Newcastle stay in the game for long periods City could become a bit jittery.

“It is going to be interesting and I think it will boil down to the first 10 minutes of the game.

“The pressure on City has intensified now.

“Let’s see if Newcastle can try to take advantage.”
