Man broke into his gran’s home to ask for money
A GRANDSON breached a restraining order when he broke into his gran’s home by smashing a window and asking for money.
Alfie Mavin was banned from going to his grandmother’s home in Durham, but breached the restraining order after turning up to her property unannounced on January 27 and January 30, this year. The 21-year-old, of no fixed address, appeared at Durham Crown Court, via link from HMP Durham, on Thursday to be sentenced.
Ian West, prosecuting, said the first breach was carried out on January 27, he said: “The defendant turned up to his grandmother’s house while his mum was there. He was pleading with her to give him money to buy socks before he ran away. He came back a couple of times and entered the roof space. The occupants could hear something in the roof. He was not apprehended.”
Mr West said that three days later, Mavin returned to the house, this time gaining access by breaking a window and reaching in to open the door.
He said: “He was asking his mum for money for a taxi to hospital for injuries to his hand, but she refused. He then went into the living room where there was a tussle over her handbag. He left empty-handed.”
Mavin was later arrested but he declined to answer any questions in interview.
The court heard he had previous offences on his record relating to dishonesty and damage.
Lewis Kerr, defending, said Mavin’s grandmother, who is in her 70s, had offered him accommodation in the past as he was a “young man who needed somewhere to stay”.
He said: “He has thrown that back in her face. He has been homeless now for a period of time and he extends his apologies.”
Judge James Adkin, the Recorder of Durham, made a new four-year restraining order and jailed Mavin for 16 months.
