Attacking trio earn praise from boss for performances

-

EDDIE Howe has heaped praise on teen sensation Elliot Anderson after his showing in Newcastle’s 5-1 win over Gateshead.

The attacking midfielder, 19, played the first half of the friendly and helped to set up Matt Ritchie’s opener.

Howe has promised to give Anderson the chance to impress this pre-season before making a decision on his future. The teenager has been scouted by a number of Championship clubs after his impressive loan spell in League Two with Bristol Rovers.

“I thought he did very well,” said Howe. “I thought he showed real endeavour and desire to do well. He showed his quality as well, turning really well with the ball. I thought he did well with Ryan Fraser first period.”

Miguel Almiron was another to receive kind words on his return, even as the Magpies continue to trawl the market for a new right-sided attacker after strengthening their defence in recent weeks.

Howe has always had faith in the wingers at his disposal since arriving and will not be panicked should new additions in that position prove hard to come by.

“[He scored] two great goals, both different. He showed his athleticism in the first and composure in the second. So I’m delighted with Miggy,” Howe added.

“He’s come back here and hasn’t had a lot of training as we gave him a little bit of extended time off with the other international players. Physically he didn’t show any problems.”

Newcastle flew out to Austria yesterday as they prepare for a weeklong training camp. Friendlies with 1860 Munich and Mainz await the Magpies before they fly to Portugal.
