Bruno so sad as Joelinton misses out

-

NEWCASTLE United star Bruno Guimaraes has expressed his disappointment at his ‘brother’ Joelinton missing out on Brazil’s World Cup squad.

The midfield duo have impressed for the Magpies in 2022 but only Guimaraes’ form was rewarded with a spot on the plane to Qatar.

Joelinton previously told The Chronicle he was unsure over his potential spot at the tournament but backed Guimaraes to shine in the Gulf state.

Joelinton discovered he had missed out last week as Selecao boss Tite unveiled his talent-laden 26-man squad.

Guimaraes shared an emotional video from his living room as news broke of his call-up.

However, the Newcastle man admits he wanted Joelinton to join him at the winter showpiece later this month.

“I hoped Joelinton would be in the squad with me,” Guimaraes told Newcastle United’s pre-match programme over the weekend.

“He’s a great player, playing really well here at Newcastle. He’s a player who has helped me a lot since I arrived. We have a great friendship and I see him as my brother. I’m sad for him, but he’s still young and he’ll have other opportunities to play in other World Cups.

“I don’t think it will affect his career – he knows how to handle it.

“Of course I’m sad for him, but he can think about the next World Cup and continue doing what he’s been doing as he contributes so much here at Newcastle.”

Eddie Howe has constantly championed Joelinton after helping the struggling striker transform into a marauding midfielder on Tyneside. Howe also admitted his disappointment for the player after his omission last week: “I think there’s always disappointment for anyone who misses out.”

He added: “Joe has been incredible for me since I joined the football club, every single day he’s very consistent in his work and he’s producing brilliant performances but it wasn’t to be for him.”
