First marathon hailed a runaway success after mass turnout
THE first Newcastle-Gateshead marathon has been hailed as a success – and entries are already open for next year’s event.
Last weekend, 2,000 participants took part in the new event, which coincided with a 10k and the Gateshead Half Marathon, which has going since 2021.
The longer challenge followed the same course and took runners past the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, the Tyne Bridge and Swing Bridge, as well as showcasing the town landmarks The Glasshouse and Baltic art gallery.
The marathon was hosted by running events company RunThrough with the company’s race director Chris Parr hailing the event a success.
He said: “We are thrilled with the turnout and enthusiasm we witnessed at the inaugural Newcastle-Gateshead Marathon. Partnering with Gateshead Harriers Athletics Club added a special significance to this event, and we are grateful for the support of the local community.”
The event, presented by Nuun, was held in collaboration with Gateshead Harriers Athletics Club. The marathon’s Charity of the Year Children North East.
And now applications are open to enter to take part in next year’s event. Coun Angela Douglas, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Leisure at Gateshead Council, said: “We were very pleased to host the Newcastle-Gateshead Marathon, and see so many runners on the roads, and family and friends supporting.
“It’s such a beautiful, scenic route and shows off Gateshead at its best. Congratulations to everyone who took part.”
Coun Alex Hay, Cabinet member for a Thriving City at Newcastle City Council, said: “Congratulations to all the runners who took part in the Newcastle-Gateshead Marathon. The atmosphere was amazing and the event created so many magical memories for the runners and spectators.
“We pride ourselves on hosting world-class sporting events and we can’t wait to welcome people back for next year’s event.”
