Traffic sits for five miles after crash

MULTIPLE VEHICLES INVOLVED IN MORNING COLLISION

THERE was traffic chaos on the A194 northbound in Gateshead yesterday morning following a multi-vehicle crash.

Two people went to hospital as a result of the collision involving four vehicles including a lorry on the A194 northbound.

Emergency services scrambled to the scene near Whitemare Pool Roundabout just after 6.30am.

Three fire engines attended and firefighte­rs worked to free two individual­s who were trapped inside their vehicles.

One patient was taken to South Tyneside Hospital and another made their own way to an urgent care centre.

The road was closed for a significan­t amount of time causing delays and five miles of traffic. The A194(M) northbound remained shut and drivers followed the diversion via the A195 and the A184.

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokespers­on said: “We can confirm that at 6.44am today we received a call about a road traffic collision on the A184 Newcastle Road in Leam Lane.

“Our crews from Hebburn, South Shields and Farringdon Community Fire Stations were quickly on the scene in just six minutes to begin helping rescue two trapped individual­s.

“We offered initial medical assistance before leaving those involved in the care of the North East Ambulance Service. Our crews left the scene at 7.29am.”

A North East Ambulance Service spokespers­on said: “We were called to reports of a multi-vehicle collision on the A194 at 6.36am this morning.

“We dispatched three resources from our Hazardous Area Response Team and one ambulance crew.

“We transporte­d one patient to South Tyneside Hospital and a second patient made their own way to an urgent care centre.”

A Northumbri­a Police spokespers­on said: “At about 6.40am today (Friday), we received a report of a multiple vehicle collision at the Whitemare Pool Roundabout.

“No life-threatenin­g injuries have been reported and a road closure has been put in place, with traffic being diverted on to the A195 and then back on to the A194.

“Emergency services remain at the scene.”

The A194(M) northbound from the A195 to the A184 at Whitemare Pool was closed for a time after the incident.
