Cal could be a Dab hand for the Toon

NIKOS Dabizas wants Newcastle United to sign Dominic Calvert-lewin from Everton this summer.

Recent reports have linked the Toffees’ striker with a move to Tyneside, with a fee in the region of £50million mooted.

Callum Wilson is the undisputed first choice at St James’ Park but has struggled with injuries since arriving from Bournemouth two years ago.

January arrival Chris Wood has also struggled to make an impact on Tyneside - bagging just one goal from open play for the club.

Bolstering his frontline options is believed to be high on Eddie Howe’s agenda and the Chronicle understands Newcastle are in advanced talks to sign Reims youngster Hugo Ekitke.

However, former defender Dabizas - who etched his name into Geordie folklore when he bagged the winner against Sunderland 20 years ago believes Calvert-lewin is who Toon chiefs should target.

He said: “Calvert-lewin is a very athletic and very fit lad.

“His ability to adapt to English rhythm is there. He would be the first option from my point of view.”

Dabizas also praised Wilson for his efforts towards the backend of the campaign but thinks the Magpies need more if they are to kick on next season.

The England international made a notable difference to the side when he returned from a torn calf and netted twice on the final day against Burnley.

Dabizas added: “Of course, Wilson is one of the key players for the coming season.

“The fans have a great relationship with him but if you are about to improve as a club you always need a big squad to achieve better results in the future.

“Newcastle have to find a striker who can score 20 goals throughout the season.

“If you are about to be successful as a club you have to find that kind of player.

“Of course, Callum Wilson can contribute a lot of goals but if someone else comes in I think this competition between the players will benefit both of the players and the club.

“You always need at least three strikers in your roster for a very competitive season in the Premier League.”
