Police appeal after two die in separate road crashes

TWO men have died in separate road crashes in Northumber­land over the bank holiday weekend.

One man died and a woman was taken to hospital after a car overturned on the B6320 Ward Lane in Wark shortly before 6.40am on Sunday.

At 11.35 that evening a man died after being struck by two vehicles on the A69 at Haltwhistl­e.

In the first incident, a grey BMW X5 M Competitio­n is believed to have been travelling west between Nunwick and Ladyhill when it came off the road and overturned.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and the driver, a man in his 40s, was pronounced dead.

A female passenger in her 40s was taken to hospital for treatment. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatenin­g. Their next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers.

Officers from Northumbri­a Police’s Roads Policing Unit have launched a full investigat­ion and have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Sergeant Michael Parnaby said: “We would urge anyone who saw anything to get in touch with us as soon as possible. We are particular­ly keen to hear from motorists who were driving in the area at the time, and any witnesses who may have dashcam footage or CCTV.”

Later police were called to a collision involving two vehicles and a pedestrian on the A69 at Haltwhistl­e shortly after 11.35pm. It happened between the junction with the B6322 and Melkridge.

It was reported that a grey Audi A1 and a white Ford transit van had been travelling westbound on the road when they struck a male pedestrian on the road.

The pedestrian, a man in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by officers.
