DELAY TO EASING OF RULES HAS KNOCK-ON EFFECT
A GATESHEAD health boss got her second dose of the vaccine on camera to launch a campaign encouraging people to ask questions about the coronavirus jab.
The ‘Every Question Matters’ campaign was launched on Monday in a bid to answer some of the most frequently asked questions North East residents have about Covid-19 vaccines.
The campaign is supported by all seven North East councils along with the NHS Clinical Commissioning Groups and Foundation Trusts across the region.
Alice Wiseman, Gateshead’s director of public health, had her second dose of the Oxford/astrazeneca vaccine at Blaydon Primary Care Centre.
In April regulators in the UK and Europe have said that the Oxford/ Astrazeneca vaccine poses a low risk of causing rare brain blood clots called cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST).
But she pointed out that people who catch coronavirus are much more likely to get blood clots.
She said: “I’m not nervous at all. I have had the opportunity to ask all the questions I needed to ask and get the answers. There is always a risk with medicine.
“I was reading an ibuprofen packet yesterday and it said there was a risk of a heart attack but you wouldn’t not take an ibuprofen.
“With the vaccine you would have to have three times the capacity of Wembley Stadium before you had someone at risk of blood clotting.
“Blood clotting happens in four in a million cases with the vaccination but it 165,000 in a million if you get coronavirus. So I am completely comfortable and confident.”
Ms Wiseman urged people to ask questions about the vaccine if they unsure but to go to a reliable source such as a GP or healthcare professional.
Frequently asked questions, and their answers, can also be found on beatcovidne.co.uk.
She continued: “The campaign today is to say to people ‘no question is stupid.’ I would much rather someone wasn’t sat at home worrying about if something was safe.
“The purpose of the campaign is to make people much more comfortable about the questions they have.”
Ms Wiseman said that with cases on the rise again it is important that everyone gets their vaccination when offered it.
FREE Parkrun races will be suspended until at least Saturday July 24 due to the lockdown extension.
Parkrun, which usually organises the free-to-enter 5k runs across the UK on Saturdays, had hoped to resume them on June 5 and then June 26.
But as permission from many landowners hinged on England moving to the fourth step of its lockdown ‘roadmap,’ which it was hoped until this week would happen on June 21, the organisers have pushed their target start date back to July 24, with lockdown measures set to and on Monday, July 19.
Parkrun events across the North East include Saturday morning 5k runs in Exhibition Park in Newcastle, Saltwell Park in Gateshead and the Rising Sun Park in North Tyneside.
Participants in them can have their runs timed. Parkrun
UK said in a statement on Monday evening: “A huge amount of work has been done in recent weeks to ensure we have permission to return from the large majority of landowners.
“Whilst this delay is disappointing, we respect the fact that a significant number of these permissions were contingent on the country moving into step 4, and we will therefore target a new reopening date of Saturday, July 24.”
It comes after the Communities Secretary, Robert Jenrick, and the Culture Secretary, Oliver Dowden, wrote to all councils in the UK last month urging them to permit the resumption of the weekly Parkrun in their areas.
