A fiery treat

Zog, the over-enthusiastic dragon, is returning to the stage to bring fun and laughter to youngsters of all ages

MADAM Dragon’s most determined pupil is roaring back to the stage this summer.

Zog, based on the bestselling book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, is flying across the UK on a 10-week tour courtesy of Freckle Productions, and opening on July 3.

Large in size, and keen in nature, Zog is eager to win a golden star at Madam Dragon’s school, where dragons learn all the things that dragons need to know. As we all know, however, Zog tries a little too hard and bumps, burns and roars his way through years one, two and three.

Thankfully, the plucky Princess Pearl patches him up ready to face his biggest challenge yet… a duel with knight, Sir Gadabout the Great.

Jen Sutherland, founder of Freckle Productions, says: “We’re thrilled to be able to get back to doing what we do best, entertaining families and introducing young children to the magic of live theatre. After the last year, being able to bring the Zog to theatres around the country is going to be very special indeed!”

Published in 2010, Zog won the Galaxy National Children’s Book of the Year Award. It has since sold more than a million copies and has been published in 19 languages.

Zog has been adapted for the stage by Freckle Productions, who are pioneers in imaginative storytelling for children and well-known for their adaptations of classic Julia Donaldson titles including Stick Man and Tiddler and other Terrific Tales.

The 2021 cast features Billy Mahoney as Zog, Lois Glenister as Princess Pearl, Benedict Hastings as Sir Gadabout, Asha Cornelia Cluer as Madam Dragon and Danielle Whittaker in various roles. And the cast of actor-puppeteers bring the world of Zog to life with handcrafted puppets designed and created by Little Angel Theatre co-founder Lyndie Wright.

With songs by Joe Stilgoe, it’s suitable for children and families of all ages, and has a running time of an hour with no interval.
