MPS COMPLAIN AS BORIS JOHNSON CONFUSES TYNESIDE WITH TEESSIDE AFTER WHITLEY BAY TRIP

THE Prime Minister seemed to be a bit confused during his visit to the North East, mixing up Tyneside and Teesside in a now-deleted tweet. Boris Johnson took a trip to Whitley Bay on bank holiday Monday to speak to locals during a preelection visit.

He was spotted going into the Whitley Whaler chippy on Marine Avenue where he ordered a “small chips” before strolling along the promenade and was spotted chatting to walkers near the Spanish City. He tweeted a picture of himself in Whitley Bay, but said he was in Teesside.

The Prime had been on Teesside earlier in the day, when he took a tour of Hartlepool’s power station along with Hartlepool MP Jill Mortimer.

In a now-deleted tweet, the Prime Minister said: “It was a fantastic day to be out campaigning in Teesside,

where we’re delivering a massive programme of investment as part of our plan to level up the whole of the UK. Remember to vote Conservatives this Thursday for Conservative councillors who keep your council tax low.”

After annoyed locals pointed out the mistake, the tweet was deleted and was re-written to say the North East instead of Teesside. But many North East MPS and residents took to Twitter to fume over the mistake.

North of Tyne mayor Jamie Driscoll said: “Hardly surprising that Boris Johnson tweeted he was in Teesside when he was in Whitley Bay – he has no moral compass. #Whitleybaynotteesside.”

Alan Campbell, MP for Tynemouth, said: “The PM believes he was campaigning in Teesside. Actually he was in Whitley Bay, North Tyneside.

“He doesn’t really care where he is or what he says. He doesn’t really care about who he meets or what they care about. Vote Labour on Thursday.”

Kate Osborne, MP for Jarrow, said: “Boris Johnson knows so much about the North East that he thinks he’s in Teesside when he’s in Whitley Bay. There’s a clue in the signage behind, you Boris.”

Meanwhile, Dan Hicks wrote: “You can delete your tweet but Whitley Bay is still on Tyneside not Teesside”, and Rachel Wearmouth said: “This is not Teesside. This is Whitley Bay, which is in *Tyneside*. Hastily deleted by the PM but still very, very funny.”
