IF there is one player who knows a thing or two about turning up in big games it is Aiden Mcgeady.

Sunderland’s talisman in recent seasons returned to the bench against Morecambe on Saturday after struggling for fitness this season.

Injuries have plagued the winger’s campaign, making emulating last year’s impressive campaign a difficult feat to follow.

Mcgeady is not getting any younger, but the 36-year-old stood up to the plate in the

2020-21 season and almost single-handedly dragged

Sunderland to the playoffs.

His creative genius was one of the main reason’s behind year, Charlie Wyke’s impressive campaign in front of goal and Alex Neil will again be able to call on the former Celtic man for the League One play-offs. Mcgeady has proved a vital weapon in Sunderland’s arsenal when it matters most. The jury was out when the former Republic of Ireland international was banished by former boss Phil Parkinson. Would he still be the same player? Would he be able to recreate moments of magic like the Checkatrade Trophy final?

In short, the answer was yes.

Mcgeady popped up with moments of absolute genius last his through ball for Lynden Gooch which won Sunderland the Papa John’s Trophy one of a handful of magical moments. This year has been a frustrating one for red and white supporters. Mcgeady has played just 16 times this season but has chipped in with a credible three goals.

Speaking about his return to fitness, Neil said: “Aiden has made good progress, he has been on the grass and he has trained with the lads. We will take a view on his fitness.” Mcgeady penned a one-year deal last summer and with time currently running out on his current deal it could well be one final hurrah from the talismanic midfielder if he helps steer Sunderland towards the Championship.
