Protesters didn’t damage monument

-

IT WAS with complete disbelief that I read the headline ‘Damage to Collingwood Monument’ by Surfers against Sewage protesters.

As I happened to be swimming at Cullercoats on the morning of the protest march, I saw the arrival on the beach of the very small, well-behaved group of youngsters who hardly looked like a bunch of vandals.

On reading further, their

odious crime seems to have been a few chalk drawings and words written by the children, with the most ‘offensive’ being “no poo”!

The organisers removed the chalk graffiti with a mop and a bucket so there was no lasting damage.

Compare this with the scandalous amount of waste and chemicals deposited in the North Sea by water companies and I’m sure Lord Collingwood would have approved of their actions. Maggie Paczek,
