New cycling route is a white elephant

-

CONGRATULATIONS to

North Tyneside Council for finding an imaginative way to waste vast sums of my and my fellow council taxpayers’ hardearned money – by building a permanent segregated two-way safe system for pedestrians and cyclists between the Fish Quay and St Mary’s Lighthouse.

They even kindly illustrated it for us doubters in the papers by means of a picture showing what the new project will look like.

May I suggest that by showing two cyclists and two pedestrians that they are probably guilty of exaggeration of the potential

use of this marvellous white elephant. As an example I have yet to see a single cyclist on the cycle route along the coast road.

Similarly, the cycle route in Rake Lane where cyclists use the pavement on the opposite side of the road. Surely a better use of our money would be to repair the many dangerous potholes on our roads which are a particular hazard for those law-abiding cyclists who actually use the roads as well as causing expensive damage to many cars.
