She wasn’t charmed by posh Geordie
MIKE Milligan’s article about Geordies trying to talk posh (The Chronicle, May 19) reminded me of a tale my mother used to tell us.
Outside the fish and chip shop in Gosforth – old Gosfordians still refer to it as ‘Bob Young’s’ – one evening a young man dressed in a long black coat and wearing a white silk scarf tried to chat her up.
After his chat-up lines failed he said to her: “Don’t you know whom I’m is?, I’m in the footballing profeshing”.
He still had no luck. This would have been in the 1920s. AW, Gosforth
