Fighters from Brandon show off their skills

-

BRANDON Boxing Club’s fighters enjoyed a bout of in-ring success at two North East shows, writes TONY HODGSON.

Talented light-welterweight Nathan Burton was first in action for the Durham-based club at The Point nightclub in Sunderland.

He was up against a tough opponent from Rainham Boxing Club in London Aryan Bakhshzaad - but was in fine form as he took a welldeserved points decision.

Club fighters then travelled to a show at Spennymoor Boxing Academy - a massive day for BBC as lead coach Simon Patterson’s son Lewis made his competitive debut.

Head coach Alex Oliver said: “After several skills bouts the club thought it was a good time for Lewis to step up.

“The decision proved correct as Lewis’s classy footwork and sharp shots deterred Motherwell’s Kayne Mcpake, who had travelled down from Scotland with his father and coach Tony - a former top amateur representing Scotland at the Commonwealth Games.

“Both Lewis and Kayne have bright futures in the sport.”

John Dodsworth showed great courage going into a rematch with Harris Abbas from the Empire School Of Boxing in Blyth.

Dodsworth had been outpointed by Harris just two weeks earlier but was back on form and after a hard-fought contest took a unanimous points decision.

Brandon’s most experienced junior boxer John Dixon was up against Arom Karim from the Purge Boxing Club in Yorkshire.

Karim had boxed at a higher weigh category than Dixon - but Dixon stepped up in weight and delivered one of his most impressive displays to date.

His strength started to tell in the second and third round as he drove Karim back to the ropes.

In the final round the referee issued a standing count to Karim before Dixon was announced a unanimous winner.
