Pundit hails Schar after Forest win
JAMIE Redknapp was left in awe of Fabian Schar after the Newcastle United defender played a huge role in his side’s
3-2 win against Nottingham Forest.
Eddie Howe’s side headed into the game in the Midlands unbeaten in their last three games in all competitions.
An injury blow to Anthony Gordon took place during the 4-4 thriller, with Howe all but ruling him out of the clash at the City Ground after the game at St James’ Park.
It was therefore a major surprise when Gordon was named in the starting XI before going on to play the whole game, giving Howe a major attacking boost.
A clever corner routine put Newcastle in front with a deep cross from Kieran Trippier, met first-time on the volley by Bruno Guimaraes.
But Anthony Elanga equalised shortly after, only for Schar to score his third goal in as many games with a superb finish inside the box. Callum Hudson-odoi levelled up the game just before half-time, with a tense second period going Newcastle’s way with Guimaraes on target yet again.
With Guimaraes’ brace stealing the headlines, the form in the attacking box of Schar is perhaps going underappreciated; however, Jamie Redknapp was on hand to praise the defender.
“As that ball falls to him [Schar], it is a wonderful finish,” he said on Sky Sports. “If that had been Callum Wilson, we’d have been saying [that’s expected.]
“He’s already got his eyes on the prize. He’s thinking if this falls to me I’m going to make sure I can get a good finish, a clean connection, and that’s exactly what he does.
“It falls to him and bang. Great goal. A really lovely finish. He has got good technique.”
