Flag gesture brings tears to the eyes

AN emotional Bruno Guimaraes did not look like a player contemplating his future as the Newcastle United star was reunited with his family after the 5-1 win over Sheffield United.

After being Newcastle’s heartbeat in midfield during the 5-1 win against the Blades, scoring the vital second goal and putting in an energetic display, the Brazilian made his way down the touchline after the match. With the cameras packed away and the supporters soaking up the important victory in various city watering holes, Bruno could relax a little.

Waiting for him at the Leazes corner of the ground were his family who he embraced warmly before heading home. It was a moment that underlined what’s important to the star but also an indication that he’s happy “at home”.

Before the game Bruno had cut a proud figure after glancing up at the Gallowgate End to see a flag that read: “From Alianca and Rio to Newcastle upon Tyne, a home away from home, Joelinton and Bruno, our Brazilian Geordies.” As Bruno walked on to the field with Joelinton’s son, it suggests both of the Brazil stars will still be here next season.

Because it’s ultimately not down to a clause, it’s down to whether Bruno wants to stay on Tyneside or not. And if Bruno tells his agent that he’s happy at United that could be that.

The clause in his contract will be expiring at the end of June and that gives Newcastle fans a lot of hope that the midfield ace will start pre-season. Bruno told NUFC TV after the game: “To be honest I was now speaking with Joe. Me and him, we wanted to cry when we saw this. It was very special. I made some effort to not cry on the pitch because it was very beautiful. My family sent me a message, they were very happy as well. Thank you for the whole fans, they have been unbelievable with me and with Joe as well.”

Also watching on was Bruno’s midfield colleague Sandro Tonali, who could be just six games away from playing again in the Premier League. Suddenly that 10 month global ban has quickly run down and he can see light at the end of the tunnel with Newcastle if the FA do not bolt on an extra suspension. With no competitive action for Newcastle in June and July, August could well be his return date on match day three.
