Magpies boss snubbed from league award
NEWCASTLE United manager Eddie Howe has been left off the shortlist for the Premier League’s Manager of the Year award - and fans are defiant over the decision.
The club need just four points from the last three games to secure European football for next season, during a campaign that has seen the team battle an injury crisis. Ouside of the league, Howe also contested two domestic cup quarter-finals, and delivered a famous win against French heavyweights PSG in their Champions League group stage effort.
It wasn’t enough to secure Howe a spot on the Manager of the Year list, which includes obvious frontrunners Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta. Unai Emery claims a place, with his high-flying Aston Villa looking to keep a hold on their Champions League spot, and Bournemouth’s newcomer Andoni Iraola rounds out the shortlist with his team currently 10th in the league.
Commenter Anne Mumford isn’t pleased at Eddie Howe being overlooked: “Shocking decision not to include Eddie Howe on shortlist. All this nonsense about needing more young English Managers, and our superb Manager has been overlooked. The PL agreed that our takeover was ok, but it does sometimes feel that we are punished for it. Anyway, I know how good a manager Eddie is x.”
User Hallelujah John Tudor says: “Would be brilliant if Newcastle pipped the media darlings Tottenham for fifth place. Eddie has done a fantastic job considering all the ridiculous injuries. I’m sure that will be looked at during the summer.”
Jetx writes: “It’s easy to be the best manager when you’ve had the most money and best worldwide talent to choose from for many years. The criteria needs to be seriously looked at.”
