‘Mighty Atom’ heads to Italy with England
SAVANNAH Stubley, who fights out of the Empire School of Boxing in Blyth, is off to Italy to represent England in the European Championships alongside Durham’s Georgia O’Connor (75kg) and Darlington’s Joe Tyres (56kg).
Multi-champion Stubley fights at 48kg and, at 16, she has already won National, Golden Girl and Hull Box Cup titles, as well as being the first female to lift the Three Nations title back in 2015, successfully defending it the following year.
“It’s been a good journey and Savannah has worked really hard for her rewards,” said Blyth supremo Les Welsh. “She’s coming along quite nicely and, although it’s going to be too soon for her to go to the 2020 Olympics, we will aim for the next one in 2024. The first thing she said when walking into our gym eight years ago is she wanted to medal at the Olympics.”
Nicknamed “The Mighty Atom”, Savannah will be going Viva Italia for 10 days with the England squad before, depending on how she does there, her focus turns to other international tournaments later in the year.
“We’ll be looking at the Worlds, and possibly the Youth Olympics later in the year,” added Welsh.
