All go at Vickers Armstrong 80 years ago

THE men of Vickers Armstrong were hard at work 80 years ago.

Our photo shows a heavy engineerin­g workshop in Elswick, Newcastle, in December, 1938.

The works, once dubbed “the workshop of the world”, were responsibl­e for countless feats of engineerin­g and industrial developmen­t.

The factory complex on the Tyne establishe­d by William George Armstrong in 1847 to manufactur­e hydraulic cranes.

The old Vickers Armstrong works was most famous for the production of tanks and munitions.
