Sir, I would like to register my disappointment, that a Christian newspaper like this, chooses to repeat such unkindness about one of our Archbishops.
I am deeply disturbed by the need of the press or those who feed them the stories to keep feeding us these negative images. In the mid-1980s, I had the privilege of working with John Sentamu in Tulse Hill. There he led a very diverse congregation in ethnicity, economically and educationally (with many Oxford & Cambridge graduates). Those from the local community flocked to the church and a strong congregation developed.
Waffle does not grow a church! He responded to all the congregation, and took a lead in showing how as a church we care for one another’s needs. I am aware of many who have come to faith through his ministry, and several who have themselves entered ordained ministry. My experience of him is a strong leader, passionate about the faith, deeply prayerful and someone who encouraged lay ministry and who worked collaboratively with both lay and ordained.
I believe The Church of England is very lucky to have him. Perhaps those who are feeling so insecure, in the presence of an excellent and prayerful man of God may tr y and seek the relevant help they need instead of projecting their insecurities in such negative ways.
