Commitment to tackling climate change
The General Synod pledged their commitment to fighting climate change by voting through a Motion to recognise and act on the damage being done to the planet. Members voted 274 in favour, one against with three recorded abstentions. Canon Giles Goddard, who moved the Motion for the Southwark Diocese, called it ‘unambitious’. “It’s not calling for radical action by the Church at this stage. It’s not highlighting particular issues.” He said it touches on investment and disinvestment – because that’s where its genesis was – but it doesn’t go into detail on that. “It’s hoping to do something very simple,” Mr Goddard added. Mr Goddard said passing this Motion was a responsibility, and a chance to look relevant. Bishop of Sheffield Steven Croft said the Church of England has a critical role to play.
