WINE OF THE WEEK

- Graham Gendall Norton

Tesco Finest White Burgundy 2013 Tesco Express £10.79 (£8.79 until 21 April) Yes, the grape is Burgundy’s classic, Chardonnay. That grape fell from favour as shelves were swamped with over-full-bodied and over-alcoholic bottles from the New World, especially SE Australia. Here’s the real French thing (Alcohol 12.5%.), dry yet with subtle fruit. It comes from the south of the region, in the Côte Chalonnaise. It must not be served too cold. Best placed from room temperature, in a bowl of ice. Give it time to open out in the glass.

On the nose, there was fresh white peach, a touch of citrus, a hint of flowers. On the palate, providing not too chilled, an inviting crispness, holding light white orchard fruits, with hints of melon and vanilla.

The finish was long and expansive. This was truly a refreshing wine. It will go well with fish and with white meats, especially chicken.
