Sex is boring

-

Sir, One thing I have learned from the continuous correspondence on sexuality is how boring sex can become. Sex has been described as a gift from God yet it is astounding that so many correspondents have generated so much tedium over it. We could do with light relief with a comment along the lines of Galatians 5:12.

Arguments range from what appear to be clear guidelines in Scripture, through a more interpretive understanding to the need of all humans to have the right to be fulfilled. I have just come across an old cutting that reads: “Pentecost began with people who were willing to forsake everything to follow Jesus”. I understood that this is what following Christ is all about. Matthew 8:20 shows no compromise on this, ending with “leave the dead to bury their own dead”.

Surely this means we should leave things like gender issues to those who are not part of the Gospel movement. Jesus Christ died a bloody death aged just 33. Why should we be obsessed with sexual fulfilment?

In Ephesians 4 Paul tells us we are to move on from our old life, not to be deluded by its lusts, and to be renewed in the spirit of our minds. It is too easy to believe God wants to give us worldly things but we must not deceive ourselves – Jeremiah 17:9 tells us that the heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure.

Bartimaeus left all his security of his old life when he went to Jesus – he dropped everything when he was called. Finding his sight he lost the security of his job as a professional beggar.

The rich young ruler went away sorrowful because he was asked to give away his money. Why should sexual fulfilment be treated any differently from wealth?
