The Donald trumps faith
Jimmy Carter announced that the cancer he is suffering from has spread to his brain with the grace and faith that were to be expected of him. At the age of 90 he is continuing to teach adult Sunday school at the Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia as he has done for decades. Last week he had to teach an extra class to accommodate all the people who wanted to hear him. His subject was love and he alluded briefly to his illness. During the lesson he spoke of the importance of mediation and said it can help resolve any problem, whether between individuals or nations. Carter’s evangelical faith was not enough to win him support from evangelical voters. Polls show they are currently enamoured of the threetimes married Donald Trump, a man who says he does not need to repent and who, in the words of New York Times columnist Frank Bruni is an example of just about all the seven deadly sins except sloth. Alexis de Tocqueville said that when you meet a priest in America you are surprised to discover he is really a politician. Right-wing politics often trumps faith for American evangelicals.
