Diocese of Guildford
The Bishop of Guildford has shared a platform with Baroness Warsi to discuss challenges of social integration whilst retaining identities of faith and culture. The Rt Rev Andrew Watson spoke alongside the Senior Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs in front of an audience of guests from Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, Jewish and Baha’i faiths in the HG Wells Centre in Woking.
Addressing an audience of 200, Bishop Andrew spoke of the need to feel confident in one’s own faith. He expressed concerns that Christians were afraid to express their beliefs in case of offending others, a trait that other religions sometimes viewed as apathetic.
Offering a ‘roots down, walls down’ model for positive dialogue with those of other faiths and cultures, Bishop Andrew said he wanted to “affirm openness, learning, and adventure from the basis of strong roots in one’s own faith.” He said that this type of engagement can make one stronger and less defensive in one’s own faith tradition.
