Churches all over Shropshire are being urged to sign up to the organisation specially established to promote their historic buildings to visitors and tourists. Shropshire Churches Tourism Group (SCTG) has been in existence for just six years but has already successfully promoted member churches through its very popular printed brochure and its website.
“We have more than 100 members - membership that has increased each time we invite churches to join - which is really great. We can, however, easily accommodate more and want to encourage all our local churches to take visitors seriously and explain our buildings to them,” said Christine Tinker, chair of the group.
There are about 300 historic church buildings in Shropshire, with the majority Anglican, but also Roman Catholic and a Greek Orthodox Church just outside Shrewsbury. The ancient buildings, many 900 years old and more, are visited by tourists to the County.
“This is not just about churches: tourism is worth more than £500 million to the county and our churches play a major role in that industry,” she added. “Tourism is also a major employer and if we can help maintain that it only adds more value for all of us.”
Churches who would like to join are invited to download the application form from www.discovershropshirechurches.co.uk .
