Caravan towing
Seeing the pictures of your son’s A10 outfit in the June issue of TCM prompts me to ask can I legally tow a small caravan in the UK and on the continent behind my BMW outfit?
Gordon Clarkson, email.
Despite an extensive search I cannot find any precise regulations detailing the limits of what can and can’t be towed by a motorcycle outfit in the UK, and, to complicate matters further, regulations vary from one European country to another, if you are think of touring on the continent.
Some countries may allow you to conform with UK legislation, whatever that may be, but others may not. For advice if touring and towing abroad it’s worth contacting FEMA (The Federation of European Motorcyclist’s Association).
We’ve all seen outfits towing largish camping trailers, race machines on motorcycle trailers and even tiny caravans, so one assumes the riders understand the rules better than I do, or are chancing their arm. Hopefully, one or two readers can clear up the legalities of towing with a motorcycle outfit.
In the meantime, sight of this ambitious plot captured by reader Brian Young at Stafford Showground in August 1991 (Stafford Treffen) raises a smile. The machine is a 1500cc Honda Gold Wing, but as caravans most definitely aren’t my scene, I haven’t a clue.
