Classic life
PRICING
Present prices for a good, road-ready R90S are in the range £10-13,000. Given a straight frame, anything can be revived, but cosmetic restoration can be more expensive than mechanical refreshment. Other /6 models are similar, only genuine bikes justify premium prices, so add ‘authenticity’ to a buyer’s check list.
IN CONCLUSION
By the early 1970s, manufacturers were producing flagship models in search of the additional publicity bestowed when awarded the ‘Superbike’ accolade. BMW’s assertion was the R90S had the credibility to be numbered among that exalted company. The model had all the longrunning boxer features, but this synthesis has proved an ultimate combination. Quality, comfort, style and performance in a reassuringly expensive package. This was no racer for the road, but really launched a new category, the gentlemanly ‘sports tourer.’
More than 17,000 R90Ss were made. Valued at the time, usually treasured now, survival rates are very good. A restoration project is more likely to be somewhere between recommissioning and an overhaul. BMW’s modular approach meant early R90S production used more /5 series parts, always worth quoting a VIN number if in doubt. Motorworks warns that parts are gradually becoming obsolete. With the paint scheme that was unique from the factory, reproducing that, if necessary, will be expensive and a job for the most skilled in the art.
The overall package remains as relevant today, performance is ample for modernday riding, the bike’s capability of long-distance touring undiminished.
