The Classic Motorcycle

Brooklands riders on track

- Words: John Bottomley, on behalf of the Brooklands Motorcycle Team.

The now annual excursion for the Brooklands Volunteers Motorcycle Team and the Brooklands Members active motorcyclists finally hit the jackpot this year after a good number of years of trying.

After two quite wet years we managed a dry day with cool temperatures which provided perfect riding conditions. The second milestone was a sell-out of all the places in our group. This was achieved with the help and support of the Brooklands Section of the VMCC and a few good friends who have ridden with us over the years.

We owe thanks to Classic

Bike Trackdays (Darin and Rob) who have kept faith with us over the years in providing us with a track session of our own, that gives us five 15-minute sessions on track during the day. They continue to enjoy the variety of bikes that we manage to bring to the occasion, and we also bring an aspect I hadn’t really considered before, in the atmosphere we create in the pits with the adjusting and fettling necessary to keep some of the more mature machines on track.

What the day demonstrates for many of us is the race day experience that we used to put on in the museum way back when the team was first formed. This is just as much of an attraction.

One apocryphal story attributed to the team is that it has put more mature motorcyclists out ‘on track’ long after they ever thought it was possible.

After the event I had a discussion with Darin and Rob about how we could build on the success of the day. They would like to do an active event at Brooklands which I explained would be doubtful.

We discussed a couple of other ideas associated with other venues that could be looked at. We are also interested in seeing what could be worked out with the VMCC to complement their track events at Mallory and Cadwell Park.

If we can come up with new options we will need support as they have to be viable – sadly all things revolve around money these days.

Put April in your 2023 diary for the next Castle Combe, I will see if I can keep it dry again…
