Still riding at 90

- Andy Withers.

Happy birthday to George Greenland, several times featured in this magazine, him now being 90 years young and still riding Pre-65 trials – and winning!

Ninety-plus guests attended his birthday lunch, with riders from Europe making the journey to help George celebrate, including ex-DOT works rider Pat Lamper, multiple British sidecar enduro champion Dick Ramplee and medal winning ISDT rider Mike Noyce.

The ‘lunch’ actually lasted over half a day and the celebrations for over three days, as guests settled in their motorhomes for the duration. There was lots of laughter, with stories reminiscing about George’s 74 years of motorcycling history.

Long-time friend and travelling partner Bill Faulkner entertained guests with stories prior to the cake cutting – the cake being complete with tyres and pictures from George’s archive.

Gathering at George’s home, where he tests his bikes around the garden, the neighbours were invited to finally find out what the noise was all about, with photographs, articles and some of George’s famous machines – including the 1000cc Wasp outfit which took his fifth British Sidecar Enduro championship in 1982 – all on display.
