02 Transmission
Inside the primary chaincase was a single-row primary chain, for which occasional greasing was recommended. After 1932, a new chaincase had an oil bath contained in the inner chaincase. The dry clutch, the hub of which contained a transmission shock-absorber, was of James own manufacture and, unusually, was all metal with alternate steel
and bronze plates. This drove the standard, threespeed gearbox. The clutch
for the factory-option four-speed gearbox used plates with friction inserts
alternating with steel plain plates. Gears for all models were operated by hand-change. There was a
further transmission shock
absorber in the rear hub.
