The Classic Motorcycle

Pleasures in small packages

- Alan Halstead, via email.

I would like to say how much I agree with the sentiments expressed by Roy Poynting in his column in the August 2022 issue. It can only be good to encourage fellow enthusiasts to keep riding, whatever their chosen steed.

I retired to Mallorca in 2012 and have covered over 60km on the highways and byways here on my maxi scooter. However, the urge to return to the joys of a proper motorcycle grew with the increase in availability of new 125cc motorcycles in the showrooms, mostly of Chinese or Indian manufacture, even though they sport famous names such as Benelli or Mondial.

After looking at all that were available here, I took the plunge two years ago and added a second bike to the garage.

I chose the RSX125 made by Zongshen, sold under the brand Macbor in Spain, Junak in Poland and Sinnis in the

UK. A review can be seen on the Youtube channel of ‘the Missenden Flyer.’ I was sold on the obvious Ducati type trellis frame, USD forks, the quality of finish, neat welds and cast alloy footrest hangers for both rider and pillion. The engine is a tried and tested sohc air-cooled unit with Suzuki origins.

I have been delighted with it. I can keep up with traffic in town and on B roads. Cruising at 50mph is comfortable and

I have relearned the skill of carrying speed through the twisties. Handling is excellent, brakes are more than adequate and fuel economy of 125mpg is welcomed in these times.

The bike has taken me around the coast and through the mountains without problem.

I started riding in 1966 with a 192cc Velocette Valiant – I have just as much fun now as then. Best of all, in spirited mode I change up at 7000rpm and cheerfully rev it to 9000-plus with no vibrations and a lovely bark from the exhaust.

Try that on a Bonneville or Interceptor and keep your licence…
